Dr. Robert S. Patterson
M.D., F.R.C.S.C., F.A.C.S. Certified Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Patterson Hamilton“I invite you to reshape your future!”

With 20,000 patients singing his praise, you can relax in the knowledge that Dr. Patterson’s skilled hands mean the fulfillment of dreams... and the warmth and understanding you know you deserve.

“The chemistry between doctor and patient is so vitally important.  When patients disclose hopes and dreams for a new outlook on life, they inevitably reveal fears and concerns.  I make it my responsibility to answer all of their questions and allay their concerns before any procedure begins.  But this doesn’t apply just to me.  Many patients say they feel they’re the only one in the room when talking to my staff… and that’s the way it should be”.

20 years experience.  Since graduating from the University of Western Ontario medical school in 1980 and completing plastic surgery specialty training at the University of Toronto in 1986, Dr. Patterson has dedicated his life to meeting and exceeding patient expectations.

“When you see a child with a cleft lip or palate, you know why you came into this profession in the first place.  Being able to do something about it is a privilege indeed and I feel the end results touch my heart as much as the hearts of the parents.  Perhaps this is why it gives me so much pleasure to give back to our community by teaching at McMaster”.

Not surprisingly, most patients first arrive to see Dr. Patterson via word of mouth from a satisfied friend.  It is at such initial consultations that you get to see actual before and after photos of the procedure you are considering.  You will also be invited to speak to other patients who have had that procedure.

“It is so important to feel confident when considering any cosmetic surgery”.

“Confidence comes from asking questions and getting answers.  While I attempt to answer those most frequently asked on this site, I know full well that nothing replaces a personal consultation for answers to personal concerns.  One of the most important parts of my job is to really listen and I consider no question too small or unimportant.  By listening to you, getting to know you and truly understanding your needs, I can perform the safest and most efficient procedures available, in accord with your own personal goals.
“In the meantime, here are some answers to the most common questions I’m asked regarding the selection of a qualified plastic surgeon”.

  • Where and when did you get your medical certification?
I graduated from medical school in 1980 at The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. I then did my plastic surgery specialty training at the University of Toronto, completing this in 1986.
  • Are you board certified?
Yes, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1986 and The American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1995.
  • In what specialty are you certified?
    Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Do you routinely perform the procedure I want?
For a complete selection of the procedures that I routinely perform, please refer to the site map below. You can select a procedure to view full details.
  • How long will the procedure take?
The surgical time involved varies upon the procedure being performed. For specifics, please consult the site map below and choose the procedure you are interested in.
  • How much pain is involved?
Our trained staff and medical personnel will do everything possible to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Prescription medications are given as required following the procedure. Most patients do not experience significant pain with many procedures and remark that there was "much less pain or discomfort than they expected." Generally there is a tightness/swelling/bruising/aching sensation rather than a true "pain". Specific types of pain relief can be found under Anesthesia in the procedural pages. See site map for procedures.
  • What are the risks and complications?
The risks and complications are rare, but it is always best to be well informed. Please select from the list below to view the risks specific to the procedure in question.
  • How long will the effect of the procedure last?
The effects or results following a cosmetic procedure vary greatly depending on the extent of the procedure and your specific characteristics. For results specific to the procedure that you are considering, please choose a link.  It will be taken directly to the results section of that specific procedure.
